[ Resources - Complete KiSS Tutorial ]
As you can see, this is still a bit of work-in-progress. KiSS is quite involved and there are lots of things for beginners to learn. I myself am still quite new to KiSS and I certainly don't claim to know everything there is to know about KiSS. However, I am confident in my skills and since there are precious few KiSS tutorials, I decided to make one.
This tutorial is desgined for use with Windows XP but should be compatable with nearly any version of Windows. Mac users... get off the Playschool toys. XD I also use certain programs for this tutorial. You do not have to use these and if you can equate this tutorial with your own programs, that is fine. But these are my reccomendations:
- PSP 7 - Or any program that allows you to create layers, such as Adobe. You can make KiSS dolls without layers but having them makes things SO much easier. I very, very strongly reccomend having a program that can use layers. (Apparently Corel bought Jasc, the company that made PSP, which SUCKS majorly... But thats why I've linked to Amazon instead.)
- EditPad Lite - You can substitute this with NotePad or any text editing program really. But I personally like EditPad the best. It has tabs and since you often end up with more than one text file open, EditPad keeps things simple and easy to access. (You can find EditPad Lite, the free version, on the site.)
- Play FKiSS 0.83b Beta - This is the version I use to play and create on. Very probably the most used version out there. As this tutorial deals only with FKiSS, I cannot guarentee you can apply it to other viewers.
- Gif2Cel for Windows V1.0 - Most cel conversion programs out there are designed for very old versions of Windows and won't work on the newer versions, a real pain in the butt for us modern KiSS artists. This one, however, works perfectly on higher versions.
- MS Paint - Because sometimes back to basics is best. This is not required but I reccomend you at least have it.
- Power Archiver 2001 - You have to download an extenstion from OtakuWorld to get WinZip to make LZH files and personally, I could never get the darn thing to work. But if you hit OldVersion.com and download Power Archiver, you can automatically make LZH files without annoying addons and such and its free, as long as you download versions 6.11 or earlier (the versions from the site are pay only 9__9).
Ok, so all that said, let's get straight to it!
[ Complete KiSS Tutorial - The Basics ]
For this tutorial, I am going to assume you have a working knowledge of PSP and its functions since it would take entirely TOO long to explain all the functions in PSP. If you aren't familiar with PSP, use either PSP's Help File or other online tutorials. Nothing I do in PSP is particuarly hard so you really only need basic knowledge of the main tools and how to run your computer.
- FAQ and Glossary of Terms - Don't skip these! The information I go over in this is vital and I won't take time to go over terms each and everytime I use them in the tutorial. It is best you are already familiar with them.
- Getting PSP Set Up - Work with Layers in PSP to set up for your KiSS doll.
- Drawing and Adding Items - Drawing items for your KiSS and adding them in the PSP file.
- Setting up KiSS Basics - Creating the palette, CNF and KCF files you will need to begin your KiSS doll.
- Basic CNF - Understanding your basic CNF.
- Making Cels - Creating and converting CEL files.
- Coding the CNF - Coding the cel files and their placement into your CNF file.
- Finishing Up - Finishing touches and compressing it all into an LZH.
- Quick List - A quick list of all the steps above, shortened for those familiar with the terms and only need a small reminder.
[ Complete KiSS Tutorial - Advanced Coding ]
These will be coming soon. Also note that they involve more advanced coding and I will assume that you are very familiar with everything I've gone over above during these.
- Semi-transparency
- Snap-to
- Mapping
- Set Specific Mapping
